Lebanon to pay $1.8 million debt to UN in upcoming days — Foreign Ministry

The Ministry did not specify the reason for the delay of the annual fee

BEIRUT, January 21. /TASS/. Lebanon will fulfill its financial obligations and will pay its annual contribution to the UN, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry said on Twitter Friday.

"The [Lebanon’s] debt before that United Nations, which stands at $1.8 million, will be paid in the upcoming days," the document says. "The government has already issued the orders."

The Ministry did not specify the reason for the delay of the annual fee.

Previously, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that, apart from Lebanon, the Dominican Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, South Sudan and Venezuela failed to fulfill their financial obligations before the UN. All these states were affected by Article 19 of the UN Charter and lost their right to vote in General Assembly meetings.

This is the second Lebanon failed to pay its fee since October 2019, when the country faced unprecedented economic difficulties. The World Bank called this crisis the most catastrophic since mid-19th century. According to the World Bank, 70% of Lebanese population lives in poverty. The inflation grows at 145% - the third highest figure after Venezuela and Sudan.
