Biden plans to discuss Ukraine, recent DPRK provocations with China’s Xi — administration

It is reported that climate change will be among the issues

WASHINGTON, November 10./TASS/. US President Joe Biden plans to discuss the Russian operation in Ukraine, US concerns over Taiwan and China’s economic policy, as well as North Korea’s missile launches with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, a high-ranking representative from the US administration told a special briefing focusing on the talks, held via telephone.

According to her, at talks on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, the presidents will "discuss a range of regional and global issues to include Russia’s war in Ukraine and recent DPRK provocations". President Biden intends to raise the issue of "PRC activity that threatens peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, as well as our long-standing concerns about human rights violations and more broadly, the concerns we and our allies and partners have about China’s harmful economic practices," the official added.

According to her, "the president will discuss areas where the two countries can and should work together and propose some ways to advance those efforts". Climate change will be among the issues.

She was asked to elaborate on the aspects the US president would touch upon at the talks regarding North Korea. This is the area where China and the US ``have had a history of working together," she noted. "And so I think the President will approach the conversation in that spirit," the high-ranking official went on to say. This administration’s approach is "that we should not only be able to work together on this issue as a regional question, but one where the United States and China share commitment to global non-proliferation norms. And this is something that China has historically stood to uphold, and so I think it is important for us to continue to show our work together on that," she added.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a briefing on Thursday that the Chinese Foreign Ministry could not yet confirm Xi Jinping’s participation in the summit in Bali. He said that China attached great importance to the US proposal to hold a meeting of the two heads of state in Bali, and the sides were currently in negotiations on that end.

The G20 summit will be held on the Indonesian island of Bali on November 15 to 16. Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the G20 summit; the Russian delegation will be headed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
