Taliban call on world community to unfreeze Afghanistan’s financial assets

Mujahid called on the international community to recognize the Taliban government and light the freeze on Afghanistan’s financial assets, stressing that the current government is interim and discussions on how to make it more inclusive continue

TOKYO, September 16. /TASS/. The Taliban (outlawed in Russia) call on the international community to recognize their government and unfreeze Afghanistan’s financial assets, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Thursday.

"We want to build good relations with the international community by means of diplomacy. Everything that is in Afghanistan’s interests is in the interests of the world community and stability in Afghanistan is important for the entire world," he said in an interview with the Japanese HNK television channel.

Mujahid called on the international community to recognize the Taliban government and light the freeze on Afghanistan’s financial assets, stressing that the current government is interim and discussions on how to make it more inclusive continue.

After the Biden administration announced the end of its US military operation in Afghanistan and the launch of its troop pullout, the Taliban embarked on an offensive against Afghan government forces. On August 15, Taliban fighters swept into Kabul without encountering any resistance and gained full control over the Afghan capital within a few hours. Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani said he had stepped down to prevent any bloodshed and subsequently fled the country. On September 6, the Taliban said it had taken control of the entire country and announced a new interim government on the following day. The government is formed by Taliban members only.

Meanwhile, the economic situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating rapidly, with skyrocketing food and fuel prices, hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs, and financial activities shrinking dramatically.
