Moldova’s Constitutional Court approves results of parliament election

Mandates of the deputies will be recognized as valid

CHISINAU, March 9. /TASS/. Moldova’s Constitutional Court has approved the results of February 24 general election and the elected MPs’ mandates, Constitutional Court’s head Mihai Poalelungi said on Saturday.

"The results of the election to parliament of the Republic of Moldova … dated by February 24, 2019 shall be confirmed," Poalelungi said. "Mandates of the deputies elected to parliament of the Republic of Moldova shall be recognized as valid.".

It means that the opposition Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova that calls for improvement of relations with Russia (35 seats), the ruling pro-Western Democratic Party (30 seats), the pro-Western ACUM bloc (26 seats), the Shor party (7 seats) and three independent deputies made it into the Moldovan parliament.

According to Poalelungi, the judges rejected the appeal to declare the election invalid, which certain parties and candidates had submitted to the Constitutional Court.

The February 24 parliamentary election was held under a combined electoral system: fifty lawmakers were elected on party lists and another 51 in single-seat constituencies. The OSCE and CIS observers who monitored the election recognized that voting was generally fair and democratic.
