MOSCOW, August 25. /TASS/. Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova will face the second seed, Romania’s Simona Halep, in the first round of the US Open, the tournament’s press service said.
The US Open, which is the last Grand Slam of the year, is scheduled to take place on August 28 to September 10.

Sharapova was earlier set to serve a two-year suspension for violating anti-doping regulations starting January 26, 2016. However, the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on October 4, 2016 to cut her suspension term from 24 to 15 months.
She made her return in April at Stuttgart, reaching the semi-finals. Due to an injury, she pulled out of the Wimbledon qualifying due to an injury, while she failed to make the necessary number of rating points to take part in the French Open since she had not received a wild card. US Open will be her first post-ban Grand Slam tournament as she has been granted a wild card into the main draw.
Sharapova has already played against Halep six times, scoring six victories.
A for the US Open, during her career, Sharapova won ten matches in the first round, without facing a defeat. She won the tournament in 2006.
Russia Svetlana Kuznetsova, the eighth seed, will start with a clash against Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is set to play against Christina McHale of the United States, Evgeniya Rodina will face Canada's Eugenie Bouchard, Daria Kasatkina will take on China’s Wang Qiang, while Ekaterina Makarova is going to play against Germany’s Mona Barthel. Russia’s Elena Vesnina and Natalia Vikhlyantseva will know their opponents after the qualification stage.
Sharapova is Russia’s most famous tennis player having won a total of five Grand Slam tournaments, namely the Australian Open in 2008, the French Open in 2012 and 2014, Wimbledon in 2004 and the US Open in 2006. She also clinched the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and was the 2008 Federations Cup champion.
