IIHF aware of losing audience, money by barring Russia from int’l tournaments — Bure

MOSCOW, February 6. /TASS/. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) understands that by excluding Russia, it faces financial risks and a decline in interest regarding its sanctioned tournaments, Russian hockey star and a member of the IIHF Council Pavel Bure told TASS on Thursday.

The International Ice Hockey Federation voted on February 4 to remove Russia from taking part in the 2026 IIHF World Cup.

"One of my arguments was that the World Championship would not be appealing enough without Russia’s participation," he said in an interview with TASS. "Moreover, I have pointed out that they [IIHF] will be losing their sponsors’ money without us. According to one of the provisions in the contract, sponsors pay less if Russia is excluded."

"I have explained that they will be losing both the audience and money, which leads to negative consequences only," Bure, who also serves as the Russian Hockey Federation’s (RHF) envoy on international affairs, continued.

"They said in response 'Yes, yes, we understand everything, but<…>' This word 'but' is the most important here, and we all know well where it comes from and for what reason," the Russian ice hockey official added.

In February 2022, the IIHF suspended Russia and Belarus from participation in international competitions. The national teams have already missed out on three world championships and will be barred from the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship as well.

In late March 2023, the IOC recommended permit individual athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in international sports tournaments, but only under certain conditions. Specifically, athletes from the two countries must compete under a neutral status. Russia and Belarus were also banned from participating in international team events.

Switzerland will host the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on May 15-31.
