Flu epidemic killed 50 in Russia — health official

Amost half of them died this week

ST PETERSBURG, January 26. /TASS/. At least 50 Russians have died of flu since the outbreak of the epidemic, a senior official of the Research Institution of Influenza said on Tuesday.

"A total of 50 Russian nationals died of flu, including 24 people this week," said Anna Sominina who heads the laboratory of biotechnology at the St. Petersburg-based institute.

She also said the high mortality rate in some Russian regions was linked with the mutation of swine flu, known as influenza virus A/H1N1.

According to the Research Institute of Influenza, the weekly epidemic threshold exceeds 48.8% across the country. Swine flu has been found in 96% of cases.
