Ukraine should be told to stop endangering Europe by shelling Zaporozhye NPP — Kremlin

"This is what we need to demand from Ukraine: to withdraw heavy weapons, to stop shelling, to stop endangering the European continent," Dmitry Peskov noted

MOSCOW, November 22. /TASS/. It is necessary to tell Ukraine to withdraw heavy weapons from the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, and to stop its shelling, which endangers all of Europe, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.

The spokesman noted that there was "no significant progress" in the discussion of creating a safety zone around the plant. He drew attention to the very understanding of the concept of a ‘safety zone’. "At first, they called on Russia to withdraw some heavy weapons from there, which were never there, and then everyone realized that there were no Russian weapons there. Of course, those who shell the plant should talk about the security zone, those who pose a threat, and that is the Ukrainian artillery which is shelling it," Peskov explained.

"This is what we need to demand from Ukraine: to withdraw heavy weapons, to stop shelling, to stop endangering the European continent," the Kremlin spokesman noted.

On Saturday, Ukrainian servicemen resumed shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant after a long break, artillery strikes at the plant were recorded on Sunday and Monday.

The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is the largest nuclear power plant currently operating in Europe. Russia took control of it on February 28, during the first days of its special military operation in Ukraine. The plant continued to operate normally. An IAEA mission led by Grossi visited it in early September. After the delegation left the site, the agency's staff remained there as observers. Later, the IAEA published a report calling for the creation of a safety zone around the plant to prevent emergencies due to hostilities.
