Russia’s daily tally of COVID-19 cases may reach 7,000 by early June — expert

Over the past day, as many as 4,543 COVID-19 cases were registered in Russia

MOSCOW, May 16. /TASS/. Russia’s daily tally of newly confirmed coronavirus infection cases may go up from 4,500 to 7,000 in a couple of weeks, Viktor Zakharov, head of the Department of Mathematical Modeling of Energy Systems and head of the Center for Intelligent Logistics at St. Petersburg State University, told TASS on Monday.

According to Russia’s federal anti-coronavirus crisis center, as many as 4,543 COVID-19 cases were registered in Russia over the past day, bringing the overall tally up to 18,264,836.

"Taking into account the slight fluctuations in the percentage growth in coronavirus cases in Russia, we can expect that the daily tally will not rise above 7,000 by June 1," Zakharov said.

A team led by Zakharov has developed a CIR (Confirmed cases, Infected, Removed) mathematical model to more accurately forecast the coronavirus rate for a span of one month.

According to the latest statistics, around 521.5 million people have been infected worldwide and more than 6.26 million deaths have been reported.

To date, 18,264,836 coronavirus infection cases have been confirmed in Russia, with a death toll of 377,759. The Russian government set up an Internet hotline to keep the public updated on the coronavirus situation.
