Spring wave? Expert fears coronavirus upsurge in Russia possible when weather warms up

According to the medical specialist, the next increase in Russia can be expected in late March or early April

MOSCOW, February 2. /TASS/. Another wave of the coronavirus infection could surface in Russia when the weather gets warmer, and only mass vaccination can stop it, chief specialist of the Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology Fyodor Lisitsyn told the Rossiya 24 TV channel on Tuesday.

"A [new] wave is still possible in Russia, and only mass vaccination can put a stop to it. This wave would be linked to warmer weather," he insisted.

According to the medical specialist, the next increase in Russia can be expected in late March or early April. "Vaccination should yield some results by that time. Healthcare services must be ready by that time. We need to be ready for that," he warned.

Lisitsyn noted that isolated coronavirus cases would be observed in late 2021 and early 2022. "However, these will be isolated cases, not an epidemic, if everything goes well," he noted.

To date, 3,884,730 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Russia, with 3,340,545 patients having recovered from the disease. Russia’s latest data indicates 74,158 fatalities nationwide. Earlier, the Russian government set up an Internet hotline to keep the public updated on the coronavirus situation.
