Russian TV presenter apologizes to Ukrainians for thoughtless remark

MOSCOW, April 18 (Itar-Tass) - TV presenter Ivan Urgant apologized to the Ukrainians on Russia's First Channel for his bad joke during a show, which had caused resentment and indignation in Ukraine. Bringing his apologies on Wednesday evening, Urgant said he had not wished to offend anyone and that the remark had indeed been thoughtless.

The row broke out after Urgant joked during the Smak culinary show that he "chopped greens as a red commissar did the residents of a Ukrainian village." The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry demanded explanations from Russia's First Channel.

"In the first place, I wish to apologize and ask forgiveness of all the Ukrainians and those who hurt by my careless remark in the Smak show. Believe me, I never wanted to hurt anyone by it; simply I said a foolish thing without thinking. I could never have imagined that my poor joke in the humorous show where I never say serious things, could evoke such an acute reaction in Ukraine, a country I love so much," Urgant said.

Earlier, he apologized to Ukraine on Twitter, but the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said it was not a proper apology.
