Russia may block agenda of US Security Council presidency next month — mission to UN

First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said that the US may try to complicate life for the successors to the presidency

UNITED NATIONS, November 28. /TASS/. Russia may block the program of the UN Security Council’s work in December, proposed by the United States who will assume the council’s presidency next month, Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky told TASS.

Commenting on the upcoming US presidency in the council, he said: "They might very well try to make life harder for us and for their successors. We’ll see."

"But it will come as no surprise to me if we will have to block their work program, as was the case with the Britons, who insisted on reflecting the Ukrainian issue in it as a matter of principle," the diplomat said.

The United Kingdom assumed the rotating UN Security Council presidency on November 1. In the early days of November, Russia blocked the working program proposed by the United Kingdom, because it included a Ukraine-themed session. Polyansky explained that the program should have been compiled in accordance with the reporting and mandate cycles of the UN Security Council, and Ukraine was not among such issues.

The presidency of the UN Security Council is held in turns by members of the Council in English alphabetical order for the period of one calendar month. The UNSC President presides over meetings and represents the Council in its capacity of a UN body. His responsibilities include organizing sessions, preparing reports and administering the rules of procedure. The process allows all members to take part in steering the Council.
