Russia supports India’s candidacy for joining UN Security Council — Lavrov

The UN Security Council includes 15 members: 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent ones

MOSCOW, December 27. /TASS/. Russia supports India’s candidacy for accession to the UN Security Council, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after the talks with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

"The New Delhi G20 Summit that took place last year was a true triumph of India’s foreign policy; it was a triumph of multilateral diplomacy, which has become possible, to a decisive degree, because the G20 Chair did not allow making the outcome document unilateral. The outcome document reflects the balance of interests. This is a model of how to work within the G20 and, by the way, in the UN and in the Security Council," the Russian Foreign Minister said. "As I have already said, we support India’s candidacy for joining this body."

The G20 online summit was organized by India, who chaired the association this year. In particular, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered his speech at the event.

The Security Council includes 15 members: 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent ones. The permanent members are: the UK, China, Russia, the US and France. The UN General Assembly elects non-permanent members for a two-year term, with five members re-elected every year. India, along with Japan Brazil and Germany, is among the countries that actively seek to reform the UN Security Council.
