Firearms being smuggled from Ukraine to Russia, Putin says

The president offered the Security Council to discuss the issue of arms trafficking in Russia in general

MOSCOW, October 27. /TASS/. Weapons are being smuggled from Ukraine to Russia, President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with the Russian Security Council.

"It is necessary to think how weapons and ammunition comes to Russia illegally. Including, by the way, from Ukrainian territory. Such weapons do end up, not in our Armed Forces, but on Russian territory," the head of state said.

In this regard, Putin noted, "it is necessary to look at all these channels, to look at how agency monitoring measures are organized, to look at what needs to be done to further reinforce the legal basis."

The president offered the Security Council to discuss the issue of arms trafficking in Russia in general.

"This issue is always important, I won’t delve into details now, but it is particularly [important] today, considering the conditions that we live in, the country lives in," he explained.

"Overall, there is a wide array of issues to discuss. We have two rapporteurs today: [Head of the National Guard] Viktor Zolotov and [Interior Minister] Vladimir Kolokoltsev. I would ask the colleague to report in detail, but I also ask everyone else to join the discussion of the solution project of today’s meeting," Putin concluded.

The meeting was attended by Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov, Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Director Sergey Naryshkin and Special Presidential Representative on Environmental Protection, Ecology and Transport Sergey Ivanov.
