Russian Consulate General in Houston asks US to boost security measures

Alexander Zakharov stressed that the diplomatic mission had been receiving threats since the start of the special military operation

NEW YORK, February 10. /TASS/. Russia’s Consulate General in Houston has asked local authorities in advance to provide bolstered security measures on the anniversary of the special military operation because the diplomatic mission continues to receive threats, the mission’s head Alexander Zakharov told TASS on Friday.

"We turned to local law enforcement, the diplomatic security service of the Department of State and the Houston Police Department, in advance, asking to ensure enhanced patrols and protection of the Consulate General," the diplomat said. "We are hoping that local authorities will be understanding," he added.

"Unfortunately, the threats are still received, there aren’t as many of them as there were in the first months since the onset of the special military operation but they do come in," he noted. "For example, during the second half of 2022, there were two threats of rigging the Consulate General with mines. Then, we were forced to evacuate our staff and take measures. Groups of minesweepers arrived to inspect the premises. Fortunately, the bomb threats turned out to be false," the diplomat said.

In all, Zakharov noted, American law enforcement, proceeding from the reciprocity principle, reacts to reports and requests related to possible threats.
