Ukraine not to become EU member 'in our lifetime,' Russian envoy says

Earlier, the European Commission College recommended the European Council to provide Ukraine and Moldova with the status of EU membership candidates, and postpone the decision of provision of this status to Georgia

ST. PETERSBURG, June 17. /TASS/. Ukraine will not be able to become a EU member state "in our lifetime," Russian Permanent Representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov said Friday.

"I can say: in our lifetime, Ukraine will not be a member of the EU," the envoy told TASS on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Earlier on Friday, the European Commission College recommended the European Council to provide Ukraine and Moldova with the status of EU membership candidates, and postpone the decision of provision of this status to Georgia. The decision on provision of the candidate status will be made by EU leaders during the June 23-24 Summit in Brussels with consideration of recommendations of the European Commission. Should the EU Summit provide this status to Ukraine and Moldova, then the European Commission recommends pausing the accession process until both states carry out certain reforms, which include reinforcement of the judicial system, combating corruption and oligarchy.
