Russia hopes South Ossetian new president will continue policy of allied relations with it

According to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, Moscow is ready to continue large-scale assistance to Tskhinval to promote South Ossetia’s socio-economic development, ensure its security and enhance its positions abroad

MOSCOW, May 17. /TASS/. Russia hopes that South Ossetia’s President Elect Alan Gagloyev will continue the course toward close cooperation between Tskhinval and Moscow in the spirit of integration and allied relations, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said in an interview with TASS.

"The elections of South Ossetia’s head of state that were held in the atmosphere of free expression of will, were a major evidence of people’s support for the course toward building a modern democratic state. On our part, we hope for further continuation of close cooperation between Moscow and Tskhinval in the spirit of integration and allied relations. Alan Eduardovich [Gagloyev] has a lot of work to do and we hope the new team will be maximally effective," he said.

According to the senior Russian diplomat, Moscow is ready to continue large-scale assistance to Tskhinval to promote South Ossetia’s socio-economic development, ensure its security and enhance its positions abroad.

Runoff presidential elections were held in South Ossetia on May 8. The elections were recognized as valid. Incumbent President Anatoly Bibilov and Alan Gagloyev, the leader of the Nykhas political party, vied for the office.

According to South Ossetia’s Central Election Commission, Gagloyev was supported by 16,134 voters, or 56.09%, while Bibilov won 11,767 votes, or 40.9% As many as 867 people, or 3.01% of the eligible electorate, voted against all. The voter turnout was 73.93%
