Village in Kursk Region comes under fire of large-caliber weapons, says local governor

According to Roman Starovoit, three houses and a school sustained damages as a result of the attack

KURSK, May 17. /TASS/. Russia’s village of Alekseyevka in the Kursk Region, which borders on Ukraine, came under a fire from large-caliber weapons, Kursk Region’s Governor Roman Starovoit said on Tuesday.

According to him, three houses and a school sustained damages as a result of the attack.

"Today, at about 5:00 a.m., village of Alekseyvka in the Glushkovsky district came under a fire from large-caliber weapons," Starovoit said. "Damages were inflicted to three privately-owned houses and a car parked near them, as well as a nearby school building."

"Fortunately, there were no people injured in the attack," he said. "The opened fire was promptly put off by return fire from our border guards."

Starovoit also said that the village of Alekseyevka was the first one to come under military fire in the region and experts were currently at work at the scene.

Last Wednesday, the Kursk Region extended the high (‘yellow’) terror alert until May 25. The region has come under numerous attempted shelling attacks and bombardments of checkpoints by the Ukrainian military.

On April 25, Russian air defense systems shot down two Ukrainian military drones in the Kursk Region. A railway bridge partially collapsed as a result of a sabotage act in the region on May 1.

Russia’s military operation in Donbass

The situation at the line of engagement in Donbass escalated on February 17. The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) reported the most massive bombardments by the Ukrainian military in recent months, which damaged civilian infrastructure and caused civilian casualties.

On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced recognizing the sovereignty of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Russia recognized the Donbass republics in accordance with the DPR and LPR constitutions within the boundaries of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions as of the beginning of 2014.

Russian President Putin said in a televised address on February 24 that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in Ukraine. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories, noting that the operation was aimed at the denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine.
