Putin congratulates Macron on winning French presidential election

National Rally candidate Marine Le Pen received 41.5%

MOSCOW, April 25. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a message to Emmanuel Macron, congratulating him on his re-election as France’s chief executive, the Kremlin press service reported on Monday.

"I sincerely wish you success in statesmanship, as well as good health and prosperity," Putin’s message reads, according to the Kremlin.

According to the French Interior Ministry, Macron gained 58.5% of the vote in Sunday’s presidential runoff, while his rival, National Rally candidate Marine Le Pen received 41.5%.

Putin-Macron contacts

Putin and Macron met on numerous occasions and held many phone calls over the past five years. Their first in-person talks took place in France’s Versailles in late May 2017. The French president made his first visit to Russia in May 2018 to participate in the St.Petersburg International Economic Forum. Macron also visited Moscow for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, while Putin travelled to Paris to attend events marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I in November that year. In August 2019, Putin and Macron held talks at Fort de Bregancon, the French president’s southern residence. The two leaders also held a brief conversation in September 2019 following a final farewell ceremony for former French President Jacques Chirac. Putin and Macron also met at various international events, including G20 summits, summits on Syria and Normandy Four meetings. Their last in-person meeting to date took place at the Kremlin on February 7, 2022, while their last phone call was held on March 29.
