European Union unprepared to restore dialogue with Russia on equal footing — Lavrov

The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus noted that "the existence of challenges, problems and discrepancies in approaches" between Russia and the EU was an indisputable fact

MOSCOW, October 21. /TASS/. Russia is prepared for restoring a dialogue with the European Union on an equal footing and respect for each other’s interests, but the EU partners look not ready for this kind of work, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference following talks with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in Moscow on Thursday.

"We discussed Russia-EU relations in brief. They have long been in a deep crisis. This is not Russia’s choice, as you know. We will be prepared for restoring the dialogue with the EU on the principles of equality and respect for each other’s interests. Regrettably, our EU partners are not ready for this kind of work," Lavrov said.

For his part, Christodoulides said that "the existence of challenges, problems and discrepancies in approaches" between Russia and the European Union was an indisputable fact.

"But at the same time, it is our common opinion that only through cooperation shall we be able to successfully cope with international challenges facing us. Discussions and dialogues are crucial, because they are the sole way of narrowing disagreements," Christodoulides said.
