Russian Security Council chief notes growing unpredictability of world situation

The international situation is characterized by collapse of arms control agreements and wider practice of illegitimate unilateral sanctions, Nikolai Patrushev noted

DUSHANBE, June 23. /TASS/. The current situation in the world is characterized by great unpredictability, collapse of arms control agreements and the expansion of illegitimate unilateral sanctions, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said at a meeting with his counterparts from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's member-states in Dushanbe on Wednesday.

He stressed the serious tasks facing the organization at the moment. "The international situation is characterized by great unpredictability, collapse of arms control agreements, wider practice of illegitimate unilateral sanctions, and growing conflict potential in different parts of the world," Patrushev said.

He stressed that over the 20 years since it was established the SCO had become an integral element of world politics, and its role in world and regional affairs was growing.

At the same time, he went on to say, all of the SCO member-states were "unique civilizations in their own right and bearers of ancient cultural, literary and language traditions of world renown".

It is important to treat with respect both national customs and traditions and universal moral values, he said.

"On this basis it is necessary to step up interaction in education, the health, service, culture, tourism and youth contacts, and also to firmly resist any attempts at falsifications of history, nationalism and xenophobia," Patrushev said.
