HAIKOU /China/, 8 November. /TASS/. China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation also known as Sinopec has completed drilling the Fushen-1 Well in the southern province of Hainan, China's deepest geothermal exploration well with a record depth of 5,200 metres (17,060 feet), China Central Television reported.
According to the report, the well is located in Haikou city, the administrative centre of Hainan. It's temperature reaches as high as 188 degrees Celsius (370.4 degrees Fahrenheit).
Geothermal resources have been found in several layers of the well. The project is said to be a breakthrough for geological exploration in southern China. According to Guo Xusheng, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, there are up to 1.4 billion tonnes of conventional fuel in an area of about 50 square kilometres around Haikou.
"This is a very significant resource," the geologist said. Such a deposit is expected to play an important role in the development of a green economy and accelerate the transition to low-carbon technology in Hainan.
