OTTAWA, November 25. /TASS/. The EU and Canada agreed to intensify cooperation on sanctions against Russia and confirmed their intention to continue supporting Ukraine, according to a joint statement issued after a meeting held in Canada.
"We will continue to impose extensive sanctions targeting Russia, as well as stringent export control restrictions and prohibitions. Moreover, we are committed to further strengthening our cooperation and coordination on broader sanctions actions, including disrupting circumvention, in support of our policy objectives," the joint statement says.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
The most extensive section of the statement focuses on Ukraine. It contains promises to continue financial and military assistance, to cooperate in training personnel for the armed forces of this country, and also to try "to ensure the widest possible international support for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace" based on the so-called Ukraine’s Peace Formula."
"We welcome the informal coordination between Canada and the EU’s training missions, Operations UNIFIER and EU Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM), conducting critical training of the Ukrainian military," the document says.
The summit participants promised "support for Ukraine in the security sector", attracting private investment and donations, including through a donor platform managed by the European Commission, for the restoration of Ukraine, as well as for the future development of the green and digital economy in this country. In addition, the summit participants spoke out in support of Ukrainian reforms and the integration of this country into the EU and NATO.
The European Commission intends to adopt an assistance program for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros for the next four years at the EU summit on December 14-15. The European Commission also expects to agree on the 12th package of sanctions against Russia by the end of the year, discussions on which continue between EU countries.
