TASS, February 27. Construction of a new commercial hydroponic greenhouse in Naryan-Mar will begin in 2023, the Nenets Autonomous Region's press service said. The construction of additional greenhouses in the region was on agenda of a meeting in December, 2022, devoted to the region's social and economic development, which was chaired by Minister for Development of the Far East and Arctic Alexey Chekunov.
"Works to design the new commercial hydroponic greenhouse have begun in Naryan-Mar," the regional administration's press service said in a release. "The Nenets Agriculture Company will begin to build the new commercial greenhouse this year."
It will be a modern high-tech greenhouse complex for growing tomatoes, cucumbers and berries. The greenhouse will use artificial lighting technologies and climate control systems, a fully automatic irrigation system, as well as heating, air conditioning, and cooling systems. "Thus, the result will be a six-fold increase in crops and also significant savings in maintenance of the greenhouse structures," the press service quoted as saying the region's head of the natural resources and ecology department, Albert Chebdarov.
The new commercial greenhouse will supply to local residents affordable vegetables, thus improving the regional food security. The project will offer new jobs.
The present commercial greenhouse, which takes 0.3 hectares, cannot satisfy the local demand in fresh vegetables. The current annual production capacity is estimated at 1.7 kg of cucumbers and tomatoes per resident. In 2022, the Nenets Agriculture Company's crops between March and October made 74.7 tons.
