Bank of Russia leery of using cryptocurrencies for investment purposes

According to First Deputy Chairman Sergey Shvetsov, the regulator considers the ruble in all its forms as the only payment instrument on Russian territory

SOCHI, September 16. /TASS/. The Russian Central Bank is leery of using cryptocurrencies for investment purposes, the regulator’s First Deputy Chairman Sergey Shvetsov told a forum on Thursday.

"Speaking about purchases for investment purposes we are also leery of that idea. We consider it to be another essence," he said. "The Bank of Russia is definitely not going to provide assistance in improving accessibility for Russian, mainly unqualified investors," Shvetsov emphasized.

The Central Bank’s position is clear that the ruble in all its forms is the only payment instrument on Russian territory, he noted.

It is planned that the State Duma (lower house) will pass the bill on regulation of cryptocurrencies by the end of this year.
