WASHINGTON, March 6. /TASS/. The administration of US President Donald Trump is planning to stop and search Iranian tankers at sea in order to "nullify" oil exports from Iran, Reuters reported citing sources.
According to them, the White House is looking for mechanisms to allow US-aligned countries to seize Iranian vessels passing through strategically important maritime routes, including the Strait of Malacca in Southeast Asia. The US National Security Council is also studying the possibility of maritime inspections.
The experts interviewed by the agency added that the aggressive actions of the United States may in the short term reduce Iran's exports by about 750,000 barrels per day. However, over time, the effectiveness of the sanctions will decrease as Iran and its oil customers will find ways to circumvent the restrictions.
According to the US Energy Information Administration, despite the US embargo on Iranian oil, Tehran generated $53 billion in oil exports in 2023 and $54 billion in 2022, mostly by trading with China.
On February 4, Trump signed an executive order to restore maximum US pressure on Iran. The document provides for the intensification of Washington’s efforts to reduce Iran’s oil exports. At the same time, the US leader allowed the possibility of a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and said he wanted to make a "great deal" with Tehran.
On February 7, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that it was impossible to negotiate with the United States because it had already deceived Tehran once. Washington concluded a nuclear deal, failed to fulfill its terms, did not lift anti-Iran sanctions and unilaterally terminated the agreement, Khamenei recalled.
