Finnish company says power cable’s emergency shutdown due to sabotage

Finland and Estonia are connected by two sets of high-voltage submarine cables

STOCKHOLM, December 25. /TASS/. A network operations manager of Finland’s Fingrid power grid company believes that the emergency shutdown of the EstLink 2 power cable, which connects the country’s energy grid with Estonia thought the bottom of the Gulf of Finland, could be due to a sabotage.

"We cannot rule out the possibility of sabotage. However, we are analyzing the situation in general and will provide you with additional information as soon as we know more," the Yle news outlet quoted the manager as saying.

Finland and Estonia are connected by two sets of high-voltage submarine cables. EstLink 1 was launched in 2007 and EstLink2 in 204. In 2022, it was reported that EstLink 3 will be built, which is expected to be completed by 2035. EstLink 2 is over 170 kilometers long, of which 147 kilometers run underwater along the northern part of the Gulf of Finland.

Earlier, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said the country's authorities were investigating the incident. EstLink 2 has already fallen out of operation in January 2024. Its operability was restored only in September.
