Fighting continues in Assads’ hometown of Qardaha continues — agency

According to the agency’s source, the government military has broken into the city held by the pro-Assad forces and are fighting against them within the city limits

CAIRO, March 7. /TASS/. Clashes between the Syrian new government’s security forces and supporters of former President Bashar Assad continue in the city of Qardaha in the Latakia governorate, the SANA news agency reported.

According to the agency’s source in the defense ministry, the government military has broken into the city held by the pro-Assad forces and are fighting against them within the city limits.

Qardaha is the native town of the Assad family, where Bashar Assad’s father, Hafez Assad, was born and buried. His tomb was set on fire by unidentified persons in December 2024 and the armed opposition seized power in the country, the Lebanese Al Nahar newspaper reported.

On March 6, clashes broke out in various areas of the Latakia governorate between Syrian security forces and armed groups supporting former Syrian President Bashar Assad. The fiercest fighting took place in Jableh, home to Alawites, representatives of the religious minority, to which the Assad family belongs.

Security forces announced that the military involved in the clashes were linked to Suhayl Hasan, former commander of the Syrian army's special forces. The Al Jazeera TV channel reported that at least 15 Syrian security officers were killed in the confrontations.

The local security authority imposed curfews in Latakia, Tartus, and Homs amid ongoing clashes that have become the most intense since the change in leadership in Syria in December 2024.
