Canada's stance on Gaza unchanged, Ottawa committed to recognizing Palestine — MFA

"We are committed to achieving a two-state solution, where Israelis and Palestinians can live securely within internationally recognized borders," Melanie Joly said

OTTAWA, February 6. /TASS/. The Canadian government has not changed its position on the conflict in the Gaza Strip and continues to advocate for the recognition of Palestine, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said.

"Canada’s longstanding position on Gaza has not changed. We are committed to achieving a two-state solution, where Israelis and Palestinians can live securely within internationally recognized borders," she wrote on the X social network. Joly added that Ottawa supports the right of Palestinians to self-determination.

Previously, the Canadian authorities have repeatedly stated that the conflict in the Gaza Strip can only be resolved on the basis of peaceful coexistence of two states with the recognition of the State of Palestine.

On February 4, Trump said at a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following their talks at the White House, that the US was considering long-term ownership of the Gaza Strip in order to develop it for the sake of peace in the Middle East. Also, he proposed resettling Palestinians from the enclave to other countries in the region, which he said could pay for it. Trump also indicated that the US is ready to send its troops to Gaza if necessary.

The Palestinian authorities and representatives of many other countries rejected the idea of resettling residents of the enclave. According to Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin took note of Trump's proposals, but Moscow is familiar with the position of Egypt and Jordan, which did not accept this initiative.
