Greenland has nothing to do with Denmark — politician

Denmark regards itself as an Arctic power only because of Greenland, and once it loses it, Copenhagen will have nothing to do with the Arctic, Pele Broberg emphasized

LONDON, February 4. /TASS/. Greenland is unrelated to Denmark, Pele Broberg, a former foreign minister and leader of the Naleraka opposition party, told The Times newspaper.

"We have nothing in common with Denmark. Nothing. We do not share the same culture. We do not speak the same language. Nothing," the politician said. Denmark regards itself as an Arctic power only because of Greenland, and once it loses it, Copenhagen will have nothing to do with the Arctic, he emphasized.

Broberg claims that Greenland suffers from "systemic racism." The discrimination appears in the "racist' baby test for Inuits, representatives of Greenland's indigenous population, the paper wrote, citing the politician’s words.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. Since 1979, it has had the legal right to declare independence by referendum. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed the Greenland Defense Treaty, agreeing that the US will defend the island from external aggression. The island hosts a US base, Pituffik Space Base, which plays a role in the missile warning system and surveillance of the Arctic region.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should become part of the United States. He has threatened to impose high trade duties against Denmark if it does not relinquish the island. Back in 2019, during his first term as president, Trump said that the US could purchase Greenland. As then, officials of Greenland and Denmark dismissed the idea as absurd.
