Israel deems Disengagement Agreement with Syria as invalid — Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister stressed that Israel will not let "any hostile force" entrench near its borders

TEL AVIV, December 8. /TASS/. Israel believes that the 1974 Disengagement Agreement with Syria has lost its validity after Syrian troops withdrew from this area following the change of power in Damascus, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

"This area has been under the control of the disengagement zone agreed upon in 1974 under the Disengagement Agreement. This agreement has collapsed, Syrian troops have left their position. Together with the defense minister [of Israel Israel Katz and with full support of the cabinet, I ordered the Israel Defense Forces yesterday to take the disengagement zone and its control positions," he said while visiting an area near the border with Syria.

He stressed that Israel will not let "any hostile force" entrench near its borders. At the same time, he vowed that his country is open to friendship and good neighborly relations with Syrian civilians and already helped people living in Syrian border areas.

The Golan Heights belonged to Syria since 1944 but were seized by Israel after the Six-Day War in 1967. During the Yom Kippur War in 1973, Syria tried to regain control over the area but failed. In 1981, Israel’s Knesset (parliament) passed a law proclaiming Israel’s sovereignty over this territory. However, United Nations Security Council Resolution 497 dated December 17, 1981 recognized the annexation as invalid.

The 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israel and Syria put an end to hostilities and established a buffer zone monitored by the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

On Sunday morning, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officially announced the deployment of forces in the demilitarized zone separating the Golan Heights, which belong to Israel, and Syria. According to the IDF, it is a purely defensive step. Apart from that, several areas in the Golan Heights were proclaimed a closed military zone, with entry there being banned.
