TOKYO, December 18. /TASS/. The ballistic missile, launched by North Korea on Monday is, presumably, an intercontinental one, a Japanese governmental source told NHK.
According to the source, the missile’s maximum altitude could exceed 6,000 km. The missile was launched on a lofted trajectory.
The Japanese Defense Ministry expects the missile to fall 250 km west of the Okushiri Island, located about 20 km away from the Hokkaido coast. This area lies outside of the exclusive economic zone of Japan. According to preliminary information, the missile has already fallen. The Japan Coast Guard calls on the ships in the area not to approach missile fragments and to report them to the agency.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida order to ensure safety and to provide the people with all necessary information. According to the Prime Minister, the National Security Council will convene after all information is confirmed.
In 2023, Pyongyang launched about 20 missiles, including several intercontinental ballistic ones. On November 21, North Korea also launched its first reconnaissance satellite.
