Russia’s new proposed resolution on Middle East calls for ceasefire

On October 18, the UN Security Council failed to pass a Brazil-initiated draft resolution on the situation in the Middle East after the United States vetoed it

UNITED NATIONS, October 24. /TASS/. Russia’s new proposed resolution on the Middle East calls for an immediate ceasefire, according to copy seen by TASS.

The document "calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected humanitarian ceasefire." It also calls for such measures as "humanitarian pauses and establishment of humanitarian corridors" to ensure "full, rapid, safe and unhindered access to all affected areas in the Gaza Strip in accordance with international humanitarian law, to provide essential goods and services important to the well-being of the civilian population of the Gaza Strip, including water, electricity, fuel, food and medical supplies."

On October 18, the UN Security Council failed to pass a Brazil-initiated draft resolution on the situation in the Middle East after the United States vetoed it. The US side said it was dissatisfied with the text because it did not have a word about Israel’s right to self-defense.

Prior to that, the UN Security Council voted down Russia’s draft resolution, which was not supported by the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Japan. Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said back then that the Security Council has once again become a hostage to Western countries’ ambitions and had failed to send "a clear sand strong collective signal aimed at deescalating the situation."

Tensions flared up in the Middle East after Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip attacked Israeli territory. Hamas views its attack as a response to Israeli authorities’ steps against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also reported in the West Bank.
