President blames opposition for trying to destabilize situation in Belarus

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that the opposition’s goal had not changed since the 2020 presidential election campaign

MINSK, October 4. /TASS/. Belarusian opposition members based overseas haven’t abandoned plans to destabilize the situation in the country, President Alexander Lukashenko said at a meeting on military security on Tuesday.

"Our runaways did not hesitate to take advantage of the deteriorating situation. Their fear of being forgotten seems to be making them hysterical so they keep coming up with twisted ideas," Lukashenko noted, as cited by the BelTA news agency. "One moment, they demand that sanctions should be imposed on Belarus, the next they call on military servicemen to disobey and sabotage the orders of their commanders and evade conscription," he added.

The Belarusian president stressed that the opposition’s goal had not changed since the 2020 presidential election campaign. According to him, the opposition seeks "to destroy the country, overthrow the existing order and sort it out with the country’s leadership." "They have opted for using force. They are no longer considering other ways," he said.

At the same time, Lukashenko pointed out that there were sleeper radicals inside the country, too. "They have supporters waiting for the right time to take action," he explained. The Belarusian president emphasized that such sleeper cells had also manifested themselves in Russia, triggered by President Vladimir Putin’s decision to announce a partial mobilization. They immediately started to chant anti-government slogans and call on people to evade the mobilization, Lukahsenko noted.
