Nationalist party Sinn Fein earns historic election win in Northern Ireland

Party earned 29% of the vote as the first choice, while the DUP garnered 21.3%

LONDON, May 7. /TASS/. Sinn Fein, the Irish nationalist party, which advocates Northern Ireland’s secession from the United Kingdom and reunification with Ireland, has won most seats in the national Assembly, the regional parliament, in a historic election win, according to the results of the April 5 vote made public on Saturday.

To date, 87 of the 90 seats have been distributed, but Sinn Fein, having won the most seats - 26, has overtook its key opponent, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). The DUP, which previously had most seats, managed to secure 24. Sinn Fein earned 29% of the vote as the first choice, while the DUP garnered 21.3%. Thus, Northern Ireland’s deputy first minister Michelle O’Neill, Sinn Fein deputy leader, looks set to become first minister.
