Mayor says coronavirus situation encouraging in Moscow

The Russian capital remains the most affected region in Russia

MOSCOW, February 19. /TASS/. The statistics on coronavirus cases and hospitalizations are encouraging in Moscow, but precautionary measures should not be neglected, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Rossiya’1 television channel on Friday.

"In principle, the statistics are encouraging. We see a downtrend in confirmed [cases] and hospital admissions as well as in the severely ill patients who are still in hospitals. But we should have in mind that the pandemic is not yet over, and we still have to be careful," Sobyanin said.

The Russian capital remains the most affected in Russia. Moscow has confirmed 964,609 cases so far. Of those, 1,972 were recorded in the past 24 hours. Overall, 880,767 patients have recovered from COVID-19 and 14,631 died.

According to the latest statistics, over 110.3 million people have been infected with coronavirus worldwide and more than 2.4 million deaths have been reported.

To date, 4,139,031 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Russia, with 3,679,949 patients having recovered from the disease. Russia’s latest data indicates 82,396 fatalities nationwide. Earlier, the Russian government set up an Internet hotline to keep the public updated on the coronavirus situation.
