TALLINN, March 28. /TASS/. President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid will visit Moscow on April 18, where she will take part in the opening of the repaired Estonian embassy. The Office of the President of the Republic of Estonia reported about it on Thursday, noting that it will be the first visit of the Estonian president to Russia since 2011.
Foreign Policy Adviser to the President Lauri Kuusing reported that one of the goals of the visit is to mark the merits of those "who are daily in the forefront of foreign policy, protecting Estonia’s interests and the rights of our citizens."
"A foreign mission of our state, which is historically the first one, is operating in Moscow, and today it is one of the biggest and most important embassies of Estonia," Kuusing said. "It is the forefront of our diplomacy."
Tallinn informed the Russian Foreign Ministry about the upcoming visit of the head of state, Kuusing said, but no agreements on bilateral meetings in Moscow were reached.
Last time an Estonian president visited Russia in 2011: Toomas Hendrik Ilves attended the reconsecration of St. John's Church in St. Petersburg.
The Estonian embassy has been in the same building in a historical part of the Russian capital since February 1921, when the Baltic republic appointed the first plenipotentiary representative in Moscow. The work to renovate the building started in 2016, and the overall estimate was 22 million euros at the time.
