Russian national team wins six medals on 7th medal day of 2019 Winter Universiade

Russia has already won 30 gold, 30 silver and 24 bronze medals

KRASNOYARSK, March 5. /TASS/. The Russian national team has broken a record of the gold medals won at one Winter Universiade and leads all the countries in the overall medal standings on the 7th medal day of the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk.

The Russian national team has won 30 gold, 30 silver and 24 bronze medals so far. A previous record of 29 gold medals was set by Russian athletes at the 2017 Universiade.

On Wednesday, Russian athletes contested eight sets of medals, winning three gold, one silver and two bronze ones.

Russian men’s and women’s teams grabbed two gold medals in cross-country skiing. One more gold medal went to Russian biathletes in the single mixed relay. Russia’s alpine skiing team bagged silver in the parallel team event final. Figure skater Stanislava Konstantinova and the Russian sync skating team Tatarstan took bronze.

The Russian women’s curling team lost to South Korea 4-7 in a semifinal. The men’s bandy team roamed over the Finnish squad with 11-1 and made it through to the final. On Sunday, they will play Sweden. The men's ice hockey team beat the Czech squad 6-3 and reached the semifinal stage of the Universiade to clash with Canada on March 11.

South Korea is second with 13 medals (six gold, three silver and four bronze). Japan ranks third with three gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

 

2019 Winter Universiade

 

The Russian Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, which has a population of over one million, was elected to host the 2019 Winter Universiade at the session of the FISU Executive Committee in Brussels in 2013. The event takes place from March 2 to 12, 2019.

The Winter Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival, which is staged every two years in a different city. The name of the international sports event is a combination of two words, which are ‘University’ and ‘Olympiad.’

It is only second to the Olympic Games. The program of the Winter Universiade currently includes six compulsory sports (8 compulsory disciplines) and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country.

The 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk offers 76 sets of medals in 11 sports competitions, which are Alpine Skiing, Curling, Biathlon, Figure Skating, Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Hockey, Snowboard, Short Track Speed Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Bandy and Ski Orienteering.
