Roughly 400,000 participate in manifestation in Paris, labor unions say

The reform plan, which raises the age of retirement from 62 to 64 and abolishes a number of special pension programs was introduced in January

PARIS, April 6. /TASS/. About 400,000 people took to the streets of the French capital on Thursday to protest against the overhaul of the pension system, according to France’s General Confederation of Labor (CGT).

According to the BFM TV channel, this is slightly below the turnout for last week’s rally when about 450,000 people participated, according to labor unions. The police reported the figure of 93,000 protesters.

According to the Prefecture de Police in Paris, before the rally, law enforcement officers conducted about 1,300 checks confiscating knives and pyrotechnics. Additionally, eight people were detained, the TV channel reported citing the local police.

The reform plan, which raises the age of retirement from 62 to 64 and abolishes a number of special pension programs was introduced in January. The proposed changes immediately sparked numerous protests. France’s 10th protest rally was held nationwide on March 28. According to the Interior Ministry, about 750,000 people participated in the protests.

On Thursday, France is holding its 11th protest rally which may be joined by up to 800,000 people, according to the ministry’s estimates.
