Russia marks anniversary of Nazi Germany attack on Day of Remembrance and Sorrow

MOSCOW, June 22. /TASS/. The Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, marking the start of Nazi Germany’s undeclared assault on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, and the start of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) will be observed all across Russia on Wednesday.

In many regions, memorable events will begin at 4:00 a.m. - the exact time of the start of the Nazi invasion.

According to the Kremlin press service, Russian President Vladimir Putin will traditionally lay wreaths to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Kremlin wall.

A series of events will be held in Moscow by the Russian Historical Society, including a roundtable at the Victory Museum and a TV link with the participation of the director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergey Naryshkin and Secretary of the Union State of Russia and Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev.

In turn, the Russian Military Historical Society will hold an award ceremony, headlined "For Fidelity to Historical Truth."

Candles in the memory of those fallen in the Great Patriotic War will be lit at over 1,100 sites all across Russia, including in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan in the Volga area, Kurgan in the Urals, Yelets and Ryazan in Central Russia, Khabarovsk in the Far East and other cities and towns.

"Memory candles will be lit not only in Russia, but also abroad. Over 30 countries will join the campaign. The candles will be lit in Donbass as well," said Olga Zanko, a lawmaker and the head of the All-Russian public movement "Volunteers of Victory."

Commemorative events will be held in the western Russian Bryansk region, whose six municipal districts have a border with Ukraine. Although the ‘yellow’ level of terrorist alert has been declared in the region amid Ukrainian shelling attacks, its residents are expected to gather for mourning rallies, church services and other events.
