MFA protests to Canadian diplomat over words of ambassador to UN about killed war blogger

MOSCOW, April 7. /TASS/. Acting Canadian Minister-Counsellor to Moscow Brian Ebel was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday and strongly protested over the remarks of Canada’s Permanent Representative to the UN Robert Rae about the death of military reporter Maxim Fomin, known by his penname Vladlen Tatarsky, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

"Canadian Minister-Counsellor Brian Ebel, who was summoned to the Foreign Ministry on April 7, has been protested over the remarks of Canada’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations R. Rae, who in fact supported the terrorist attack committed against military correspondent Vladlen Tatarsky (M.Yu. Fomin)," the Foreign Ministry said.

"It was emphasized that the standpoint taken by the high-ranking Canadian diplomat in regard to the brutal assassination involving numerous casualties is yet another manifestation of Russophobia stirred up in Canada, when any crimes committed against Russia and its citizens, including terrorist ones, are either justified or whitewashed," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.

On April 2, Vladlen Tatarsky was killed in an explosion inside a cafe in St. Petersburg, where he was hosting an event. More than 40 people were injured. The National Anti-Terrorist Committee reported that Ukraine’s secret services had masterminded the attack. On Tuesday, a court in Moscow’s remanded in custody the suspect, Darya Trepova. She is accused of committing a crime described in Articles 205 and 222.1 of the Criminal Code (terrorist act committed by an organized group, resulting in the intentional death of a person and illegal carrying of explosive devices committed by an organized group).
