Russia rejects idea to cancel closed-door consultations at UNSC

According to Dmitry Polyansky, open meetings, on the contrary, "are often meant to target an internal audience and boil down to the repetition of well-known positions for the cameras, which does not help a convergence of approaches"

UNITED NATIONS, February 27. /TASS/. Russia strongly rejects the proposal to phase out closed-door consultations in the UN Security Council, said Russia’s deputy envoy to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky.

"The use of poorly thought-out initiatives that disregard the specifics of the council's work is counterproductive. For example, we categorically disagree with the proposal to abolish the format of closed-door consultations," he said at intergovernmental negotiations on equitable representation in the UNSC. "As practice shows, it is the closed-door format that helps the council to hold a frank dialogue and find the necessary compromise on the most difficult issues on the agenda."

According to the Russian diplomat, open meetings, on the contrary, "are often meant to target an internal audience and boil down to the repetition of well-known positions for the cameras, which does not help a convergence of approaches.".
