MOSCOW, December 6. /TASS/. The "no nuclear war" formula meets the vital interests of Russia and the United States, there can be no winners in it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson.
The top Russian diplomat recalled that back in 1987, US President Ronald Reagan and General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev approved a formula that meets the interests of the entire international community: "no nuclear war."
"And it also stated nuclear war can never be won, and therefore nuclear war is not possible," he pointed out. "This is absolutely in our vital interest, and we hope that this is also in the vital interest of the United States," the foreign minister said.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia continues to adhere to the position outlined at the bilateral summit between Moscow and Washington in 2021, and reaffirmed at a meeting in the five-party format in 2022.
"We don't want war with anybody. And as I said, five nuclear states declared at the top level in January 2022 that we don't want confrontation with each other and that we shall respect each other's security interests and concerns," the top Russian diplomat recalled. "And the same was reiterated bilaterally between Russia and the United States, [during bilateral talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden], when they met in Geneva in June 2021," he said.
