New Russian envoy to Japan arrives in Tokyo, assumes his duties — Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW, March 5. /TASS/. Russia's new ambassador Nikolay Nozdrev has arrived in Tokyo and assumed his duties, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told reporters.

"Yes, I can confirm that our ambassador Nikolay Stanislavovich Nozdrev arrived in Tokyo on Monday and began performing his duties. He will soon present copies of his credentials at the Foreign Ministry," Rudenko said.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary General Yoshimasa Hayashi said earlier that the country's authorities will follow a policy of committing to a peace treaty and resolving the territorial issue when working with the new Russian ambassador.

Nikolay Nozdrev, Russia’s newly appointed ambassador to Japan, was born in 1971. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University) in 1994 and has held various roles at the Russian Foreign Ministry since then. From 2010 to 2015 he was senior counselor and minister counselor at the Russian embassy in Australia. In 2015-2018, he was deputy director of the Foreign Ministry’s Third Asian Department, which he headed since February 20, 2018. Nozdrev holds the diplomatic rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary 2nd Class; he speaks English and Japanese. Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Nozdrev ambassador to Japan on January 19. Before that, Mikhail Galuzin held the post.
