Russia ready to help Venezuela find compromise between government, opposition — Lavrov

MOSCOW, November 16. /TASS/. Russia is ready to further assist Venezuela in finding compromise solutions between its government and the opposition, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a press conference following talks in Moscow with Venezuelan counterpart Yvan Gil Pinto.

"Russia has consistently supported its Venezuelan friends in protecting their national sovereignty. We have also confirmed today our readiness to continue providing the assistance that is necessary to find political compromises between the government and the opposition to the extent that our partners need," Lavrov said. "We welcome the restart of intra-Venezuelan dialogue," the top diplomat added.

According to Lavrov, Russia supports the position of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his government that the dialogue should be conducted honestly, based on the Venezuelan constitution, and that compromise solutions should be found that would satisfy both sides. "In any case, we will be guided by the opinion of our Venezuelan friends. Lavrov added that his Venezuelan counterpart had informed him in detail of the situation in Venezuela and the work being done to normalize the social and economic situation.
