US draft resolution on Palestinian-Israeli conflict arouses questions — Russian UN mission

"There are positions of Council members that should be reflected," Dmitry Polyansky noted

MOSCOW, October 23. /TASS/. The US draft resolution of the UN Security Council on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict evokes many questions, Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's first deputy permanent representative to the UN has said in a video conference.

"I would not like to comment on it in detail. There were leaks there right away. The thing is that the work on it is not finished yet. It is not convenient for me to comment on any particular aspects of it. It's against our rules. I will only say that everyone has many questions to ask," he said.

"It is difficult to predict in what form it will remain and whether it will be adopted or not, and in general, when the Americans put it to the vote. I think that this situation will be resolved today, tomorrow at the latest. We are all ready to interact. There are positions of Council members that should be reflected. It is still a long way off. It remains to be seen how the Americans will behave," Polyansky added.

On October 18, the UN Security Council failed to adopt the Brazilian draft of the Middle East resolution because the United States used its veto power. The US expressed disappointment the draft did not include a clause on Israel's right to self-defense.

Earlier, the UN Security Council did not adopt the Russian draft resolution on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Four countries - Britain, the United States, France and Japan - opposed it. Russia's permanent representative Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council had once again become a hostage of the Western countries’ aims and failed to send a clear and strong collective signal aimed at de-escalating the situation.
