Macron would like to see some Russian regions at conference of European states — Lavrov

"They will invite members of the European Union, the countries participating in the Eastern Partnership - Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Ukraine - and also emigrants from Russia, who are actively involved in political activities abroad," the foreign minister said

MOSCOW, January 18. /TASS/. The organizers of the conference of European states French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed have nothing against inviting certain regions of Russia, which allegedly seek to maintain ties with Europe, to participate in this event, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference on Russian diplomacy in 2022 on Wednesday.

"Macron, in addition to his project for a European political community, put forward a new idea of convening a conference of European states," he said. "In the comments that followed Macron’s presentation it was stipulated that individual regions of Russia that seek to maintain ties with Europe could be invited to this event.

Lavrov drew attention to the fact that Belarus was unlikely to be considered as a possible participant in the proposed conference.

"I doubt that they will invite Belarus," he stated. "They will invite members of the European Union, the countries participating in the Eastern Partnership - Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Ukraine - and also emigrants from Russia, who are actively involved in political activities abroad".
