Kremlin weighs in on Poland's construction of barbed wire fence on border with Russia

It is noted that the height of the barrier of three rows of barbed wire will be two and a half meters, its width is to be three meters

MOSCOW, November 2. /TASS/. Poland's erection of a barbed wire fence on its border with Russia is ‘the Poles' business’, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

Earlier, Polish National Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said at a briefing that the country had begun building a temporary barbed-wire fence on its border with the Kaliningrad Region.

"I don't comment on it in any way," the Kremlin spokesman told reporters, "It's Polish, it's the Poles' business. You have to ask the Poles to comment."

According to Blaszczak, "sappers, soldiers of the Polish Army have begun work today on construction of a temporary fence on the Polish-Russian border." The height of the barrier of three rows of barbed wire will be two and a half meters, its width is to be three meters. There will also be a fence to protect animals on the Polish side.

According to the minister, the decision was made due to the fact that the Russian Federation has opened the Kaliningrad Regional airport to planes from the Middle East and Northern Africa, which, as he pointed out, created the threat of a migration surge. As Blaszczak assured, the work will be carried out quickly, as the soldiers already have experience in creating such a barrier on the Polish-Belarusian border.

Strengthening the Polish border

Due to the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border in January, Warsaw began building a new 186-kilometer fence in this area. Its height is five and a half meters and it is equipped with modern surveillance, including cameras and motion sensors.

In early October it became known that Polish border guards received funds to build an electronic fence on the border with the Kaliningrad Region. According to Blaszczak, these activities will be carried out in parallel with the construction of a temporary barbed-wire fence.

The total length of the country's border with Belarus is 418 km, while the land border with Russia is 210 km long.
