TOKYO, April 20. /TASS/. Tsunami waves of 70 cm reached the coast of Japan’s northeastern Iwate Prefecture after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the east coast of the Pacific side of northeastern Tohoku region, the national meteorological agency reported.
A three-meter tsunami warning is currently in effect for the northeastern prefectures of Miyagi, Iwate and Aomori, as well as for the southern coast of the island of Hokkaido. According to the NHK broadcaster, tsunami waves have been recorded five to 20 km off the coast.
There have been no reports of casualties or damage.
No emergencies were reported at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant after the earthquake, the Kyodo news agency said, citing the TEPCO operating company. According to NHK, the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant, located in Miyagi Prefecture, also recorded no incidents.
