Foreign cargo vessel stranded near Sakhalin

No fuel spill was observed and the operation on getting the ship afloat was in the works

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, February 9. /TASS/. A foreign cargo ship has run ashore in Sakhalin’s Nevelsky District in Russia’s Far East, the regional directorate of the Emergencies Ministry said.

"Overnight on February 9, the crisis center of the Russian Emergencies Ministry’s main directorate for the Sakhalin Region received information that south of the port of Nevelsk, a foreign cargo vessel was stranded. There are 20 crew members onboard, they do not require medical aid," it said in a statement.

The agency specified that no fuel spill was observed and the operation on getting the ship afloat was in the works.

Regional Governor Valery Limarenko wrote on his Telegram channel that the district is on high alert and the situation is under his personal control with all relevant services engaged.

He noted that the situation calls for constant monitoring and readiness for any developments.

The press service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry’s main directorate for the Sakhalin Region told TASS that an emergency rescue group had been dispatched to the site of the incident.
